I’m a fan of the AMC TV series “The Walking Dead” and one thing that always impresses me is how Darryl (played by Norman Reedus, actor you may know from The Boondock Saints) can track animals and people in the forest. If that were me, and I’m not ashamed to admit it, I would be in a lot of trouble. My tracking skills are, well, less than spectacular.
Whenever I need help with something, I turn to software for a helping hand. There are apps out there for everything I can think of and that includes tracking animals in the forest. The MyNature Inc-developed and appropriately named app MyNature Animal Tracks is the one that will come to my aid in this situation.
When you’re out fishing or hiking or doing something else and you see a set of tracks, take out your iPhone, launch the MyNature Animal Tracks app and it will help you figure out what animals left those tracks, which way the animal is heading, and how long ago the animal left those tracks.
The developer advises anyone who wants to get the MyNature Animal Tracks app to ask themselves a few questions and if the answer to those questions is affirmative, then go ahead and get the app. Those questions are:

A Great Week for MyNature!

This turned out to be a great week for MyNature with a little free publicity on our nature apps around the country, in fact around the world. Our Animal Track App was mentioned in an article for Scientific American as one of the 6 best apps for the outdoors. You can view that article on the Scientific American website.
A pleasant surprise arrived in our PO Box just yesterday and that was the recent issue of iPhone Life Magazine. I had no idea they were doing a selection of best app for the outdoors again but hey, I won’t complain. The Animal Track App was not only one of the featured apps with a 5 star rating for the outdoors but the Track Icon was also featured on the front cover. That’s big for us, we’ve been in iPhone Life a total of three times now but never had we made the front cover. Obviously the people over at iPhone Life love our Track App and we thank them for that. Keep on Tracking iPhone Life!!
We were also invited to join the #B2SAppSpecials on Twitter. That involved adding our Animal Tracks and Tree App to a special back to school sale promotion for educational apps for teachers to use in the classroom. What’s a Good Tree App?

I’ve been asked so many times “What’s a good tree app” that I figured I may as well do a quick blog post on what a good tree app for a field guide should have for content. So without further ado here’s my checklist. 
- The one most important thing any outdoor or nature app should have is the ability to be self contained, that is, not rely on a wireless signal. I don’t have a solid figure on how much of North American wilderness has cell coverage but if I were a betting man I would say less than 20%. I’ve hiked all over the Adirondacks, Yellowstone, the North Woods of Maine and parts of the Pacific Coast and cell service was pretty non existent in all those places. If any app your installing for outdoor use relies on wireless service then that app is totally useless, delete it now and save yourself future frustration.
- A good tree app should have a search feature that walks you through a series of questions or selections to narrow down the possible choices of what your trying to identify. Either the first or last selection in that search feature should be your physical location. There’s no need in filtering through oak trees native to California if your in the state of Vermont.
- A trees leaf or needle structure should be the main focus of any search, for example; Are the leaves opposite or alternate? Are the needles in groups of 2, 3 0r 5? Are the leaves compound, how long are they, are they lobed etc. ?
- In a really good tree app there should be a complete library of images of the following for each tree featured: leaf or needle, bark, profile, fruit or cone, fall leaf and range map.
Those are the absolute basics a tree app should have to perform well. You may be thinking Image Recognition for trees, seen it, tested it and I’m here to tell you it’s a great idea if it worked but it just simply doesn’t. One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that an image recognition app is going to tell you the exact tree your trying to ID. It doesn’t. What it does is give you a list of possible matches and the user has to go through that list and find out which tree is a match.
So which app fits all the characteristics mentioned? What’s a good tree app? I’m a little biased on that but I can tell you it’s the MyNature Tree Guide. It does all that’s mentioned above plus more! Is it free? No, not free but it works and after all isn’t that what you want in an app.

This past week saw the addition of four more of our National Park Tracks, Trees & Wildflower Apps released for the iPhone. Yellowstone National Park, Glacier, Grand Teton and Grand Canyon National Park join Yosemite and Sequoia Kings Canyon in our growing list of Nature Apps. The MyNature National Park App series are specific identification field guides for animal tracks, tree and wildflowers species found within each national park. You’ll be able to identify over 30 mammal tracks, native trees and anywhere from 120 to 240 wildflowers depending on which national park your visiting.
Were proud to add the National Park series of nature apps to our growing list of available apps for your iPhone. Our flagship app MyNature Animal Tracks which recently underwent a major update and the MyNature Tree Guide is currently in the shop where were updating that popular guide with a new, sleeker UI and adding a few dozen new species of trees to the list.
What’s in store for future Nature Apps with us? Well, we would like to expand our National Park series with 1 or 2 new parks in the coming year. Within the next few weeks our newest app on Fishing Knots should be in the app store. That app will feature 13 common fishing knots and is a preview of what to expect in the MyNature Fish Guide which were hoping to have out by the Spring of 2012, just in time for Trout season!

Apps for the Great Outdoors

Much to our surprise we found out that our flagship app MyNature Animal Tracks was selected by Apple for their “Apps for the Great Outdoors” campaign. This isn’t the first time Apple has featured our Animal Track app. Last summer with the introduction of the iPhone 4 Apple had used the track app as one of their featured selections in their advertising campaign. Were very pleased to be selected again and find it an honor to be in the spotlight, but more importantly that were helping people connect with the great outdoors and providing an education in nature.
Follow our tracks to the iTunes store and look for this icon. 
With the Mynature Animal Track app you’ll be able to tell the difference between Moose tracks and Elk tracks, Grizzly Bear scat and Mtn. Lion scat. The difference in shape of a Bobcat and Red Fox Track, read animal sign, how to make plaster cast and the best places to find tracks.

MyNature Gives Big for Earth Day

Another Nature holiday has come and gone, Earth Day 2011 is over and with it our big App give away in celebration of “An Education in Nature” has ended. I have to admit I was anxious to see the results of how many people took advantage of our Earth Day special. I can honestly say I nearly fell out of the chair this morning when I saw the results, we gave a way a grand total of 6,663 apps in just a little over a 24 hour period. The statistics are to me totally unbelievable that so many apps were downloaded in 1 day. Here’s the breakdown.

- MyNature Tree Guide 2,139 installs
- MyNature Mammal Tracks 1,006 installs
- Yosemite Tracks, Trees & Wildflowers 950 installs
- Sequoia Tracks, Trees & Wildflowers 97 installs

6,663 total apps installed
What makes this even more incredible is the total retail value of that final figure. On any given day our Animal Track and Tree App retail for $6.99, the new National Park Apps will be listed at $9.99 each and our Mammal Track and State Tree Quiz sell for .99 cents each. Here’s where I say Wow…… those totals have an incredible retail value give away of $41,914.53 !!!!
Now if anyone ever asks me what I did for Earth Day 2011 I can proudly smile and state that I helped 6,663 people with an “Education in Nature”.

Celebrate National Parks Week

Were all about National Parks week here at MyNature. April 16th is the start of National Parks Week and to help you celebrate were having a 50% off sale on our two newest park apps. We’ve got over 240 wildflowers packed into our National Park app. Answer any one or a combination of the MyNature 15 question search and you’ll be able to tell the difference between Baby Blue Eyes and a Black Eyed Susan. You’ll know more than the resident Naturalist in no time. The MyNature National Park App will identify whatever has 4 legs, grows tall or flowers pretty, this will soon become your favorite app on your outdoor expedition.

National Park Week

We’re very happy to say that two of the new MyNature Apps were submitted to Apple to undergo the review process today. If all goes well Yosemite Tracks, Trees & Wildflowers and Sequoia Tracks, Trees & Wildflowers will hit the app store by next friday, just in time for the start of National Parks Week.
We’ve combnined our animal track and tree app to make them specific to each National Park. We also included a brand new wildflower section as well.
You’ll now be able to identify over 30 mammals that make one of these National Parks their home. Identify native trees as well as over 220 commonly found wildflowers.
In the coming weeks we’ll be adding Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Glacier and Grand Teton National Parks to the series. Look for us in the App Store and we’ll make your next trip to one our beautiful parks and education in nature!!
